The Secret to a Great Lawn...

I spent a couple of hours yesterday evening mowing the grass and aerating the bare spots. We ended up with some sort of weed during the winter that completely ruined my yard! So this spring has been a challenge to get my grass to grow again. I've had it sprayed twice since January to kill the weeds,(which left it baron) and I have fertilized it twice in the last month or so. The bermuda grass has spread and even thickened so much that it slowed down my mower blade while I was mowing! I still have some bare spots, but it seems to be filling in nicely!

Working on a lawn is such a rewarding task (in my opinion anyway). It takes lots of water, lots of fertilizer and a little elbow grease. It is a challenge alone because of the location we live (pretty much desert). So here is a little recipe that is WONDERFUL!! A little 'home-made' recipe for an amazing lawn- PERFECT for this part of the country! Put all the ingredients into a sprayer that attaches to your garden hose.

1 c Epson salts
1 c beer
1 c ammonia
1 c dish SOAP (not detergent)
1 c mouthwash (with alcohol)

Epson Salt – aerates the ground and helps it breath so it won’t become compacted
Beer – dissolves thatch (loose clippings that are left over from mowing) and promotes microbial action
Soap – emulsifier – allows it to soak into the ground and helps spread the solution more widely across the lawn
Ammonia –fertilizes the grass by breaking down into nitrates to feed the lawn
Mouthwash - acts as a deterrent to insects

Yard work - what an emotional release! I've heard people say that when they work in a job where they are dealing with everyone else's negatives, yard work is a time to rejuvenate the mind, body and soul! I had a wonderful day yesterday, and accomplished a lot - so the yard work was an even higher elevation of rejuvenation! What a way to end my day, as well as ensure a solid night's sleep!

Thought for the day:

"God spoke: 'Earth, green up! Grow all varieties
of seed-bearing plants,
Every sort of fruit-bearing tree.'
And there it was.
Earth produced green seed-bearing plants,
all varieties,
And fruit-bearing trees of all sorts.
God saw that it was good." (Genesis 1:11-13)
